Voiceover: Meet Derrick Hayes, he's a motivational speaker and artist focused on helping the youth through art and self-improvement.

Derrick Hayes: Throughout the years I’ve been a motivational speaker. In my community I was challenged to give back to the youth. So I started teaching them how to tie ties. Anywhere from regular ties, then I learned how to tie a bowtie, a real bowtie, then I learned how to do the ascot. So instead of just being a motivational speaker I wanted to be an entertainer, but since I was dealing with neckties I put tie in the middle, so I’m entietainer. I’m located in Columbus, Georgia. I grew up in Branch Hill, Illinois, and from there I graduated from Tennessee State University. You know I’m a guidance clerk so I help a lot of young people get into college.

VO: During the pandemic, Derrick had to diversify and expand his business using the resources available to him.

DH: Right now what I do, I do alot of arts and crafts. When the pandemic came through I had alot of fabric, because I learned how to make my own ties, my own neckties, because I have a niche without a stitch, I don’t know how to sew, but I still have to make it go. I learned how to make things like coasters, stressballs, skrunchies, hair clips. I learned how to make earrings and this is actually a magnet. I took the same shape so I made this is like a charm, you put your necklace through it like that.

VO: Derrick travels through the southern United States, showcasing his art and spreading his message of self-improvement and positivity.

DH: I’ve travelled anywhere from Huntsville, Alabama all the way down to Tallahassee. I do alot of things in Atlanta, so I travel alot on the weekends. I really gotten out there, just, see the world, see what the world is like on a different, different level. Because alot of times people just sitting at home “What can I do, what can I do.” I have a, I have a program called “You Can Make It,”  and what that is is just showing people they can mentally and physically, because alot of times, people tell you one thing, but they don’t give you nothing tangible. My main mission with my products and public speaking is letting them know that you can make it, not just in life but you can make it to be an entrepreneur. You can make it and you know these skills here can help you down the road in different situations.
